The black widow is a venomous spider known for its shiny black body and distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen. Found primarily in dark, secluded areas such as basements, sheds, and garages, black widows prefer hiding in cluttered or undisturbed places. They typically do not seek out human contact but will bite in self-defense if disturbed. While their venom can cause severe pain, muscle cramps, and other symptoms, bites are rarely fatal, especially with prompt medical treatment. Control of black widow populations involves reducing hiding spots and seeking professional pest control if an infestation occurs.
